Description

The Tamiya The Hornet (2004) is a 1/10 scale, 2WD off-road remote control buggy kit. It is a faithful re-release of the legendary 1984 model that ignited the global radio-controlled buggy boom, updated with a modern Electronic Speed Controller (ESC).
Key Specifications
    • Scale: 1/10 Assembly Kit
    • Chassis Type: ABS resin bathtub frame with side bumpers
    • Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive (2WD) with a sealed gear differential
    • Motor: Powerful RS-540 brushed motor
    • Front Suspension: Independent swing axle with friction dampers
    • Rear Suspension: Rolling rigid axle equipped with oil-filled alloy shocks
    • Tires: Straight ribbed front racing tires and spiked rear buggy tires
    • Dimensions: 400mm (Length) x 230mm (Width) x 150mm (Height)

Modern Re-Release Upgrades
While it preserves the vintage 1984 aesthetic, the 2004 revision introduced critical improvements for usability and durability:
    • Electronic Throttle: Replaces the old 3-speed mechanical servo-driven speed controller with a smooth, reliable HobbyWing ESC.
    • Body Film: The clear polycarbonate Lexan body now includes a protective overspray film, allowing you to paint the inside cleanly before peeling off the exterior skin.
    • Chassis Reinforcements: Slight physical modifications were made to high-stress areas of the plastic bathtub frame to reduce fractures during jumps.

Required Components to Complete
Because this is a standard Tamiya assembly kit, you will need to source the following electronics and tools separately to get it running:
  • Radio Gear: A 2-channel transmitter and receiver unit.
  • Steering Servo: One standard-sized steering servo.
  • Power Source: A 7.2V NiMH flat battery pack alongside a compatible battery charger.
  • Paint: Tamiya PS-series polycarbonate spray paint (applied to the inside of the shell).
  • Tools: A medium Phillips head screwdriver (JIS style preferred), side cutters, and needle-nose pliers.
