The Avro Lancaster B.III (Special) represents one of the most famous heavy bombers of WWII, modified specifically for Operation Chastise — the legendary “Dambusters” raid of 16–17 May 1943.

No. 617 Squadron, formed from a hand‑picked group of elite RAF aircrew, trained intensively for this mission under the leadership of Wing Commander Guy Gibson.

Their task: deliver Barnes Wallis’ revolutionary bouncing bomb against German dams in a daring low‑level night attack.

Gibson famously told his men: “This squadron will either make history, or it will be completely wiped out.” Nineteen specially modified Lancasters took part, sending a message to Germany that could not be hidden by propaganda.
